Can I do anything as the parent/guardian?
As the parent/guardian, you have a major role in your child’s care during their hospital experience. Preparing your child for their upcoming experience is vital. Well-prepared children tolerate surgery and anaesthesia better.
It is best to be honest with your child. Use simple explanations of what is going to happen. Prepare them for the fact that they will be in unfamiliar surrounds, but will be cared for by many friendly nurses and doctors. Talk about that they will be having an operation, and there may be some discomfort afterwards. Let them know that you will be with them for all the important times, like drifting off to sleep and waking up.
It is often more stressful for the parent/guardian when your loved ones have a procedure. Your composure is essential for this process to be a smoother one for your child.
